Leh, the capital of Ladakh in northern India, is a high-altitude city perched at 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) in the Indian Himalayas. Surrounded by stunning mountain ranges, Leh is the cultural and administrative hub of Ladakh, offering a blend of Tibetan Buddhist heritage, ancient monasteries, and breathtaking landscapes. The city serves as the starting point for numerous treks, mountaineering expeditions, and adventure tours across the region.

Visitors to Leh can explore iconic landmarks such as Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and Tsemo Gompa, while experiencing the local Ladakhi culture, cuisine, and markets. The city’s strategic location makes it a gateway to remote valleys like Markha, Zanskar, and Nubra, attracting trekkers, mountaineers, and adventure enthusiasts from around the world. Leh also offers opportunities for high-altitude acclimatization before challenging expeditions to peaks like Nun, Kun, and Kang Yatse.

With its unique blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty, Leh is not only a destination for adventure but also a place to experience the rich cultural traditions of Ladakh. Its serene environment, friendly locals, and stunning Himalayan vistas make it an essential stop for anyone exploring northern India.

Peak Climbing

Choosing the right peak to attempt is an important decision. It depends on your level of experience, the time available for acclimatization and preparation, and the difficulty of the approach. Another key factor is the application process—any climb above 6,000 meters requires official permission from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF).

For some rock climbers, breaking the 6,000-meter barrier may not be the main goal. Instead, they might explore the magnificent sub-6,000-meter granite walls of Zanskar or the East Karakoram. Meanwhile, alpinists of all abilities can find excellent objectives above 6,000 meters in many of Ladakh’s remote valleys.

The choice is yours, and a first-ascent expedition can cost as little as around €6,000 per person, including flights. In every case, Dokpa Expeditions will assist you with all aspects of your journey—from choosing your objective to planning and executing your expedition.
